Lutein:
Lutein is derived from the oleoresin of Tagetes erecta L through saponification, extraction, and refining. Commercial lutein products may contain edible vegetable oils, dextrins, antioxidants, and other excipients for standardization. Lutein is insoluble in water but soluble in n-hexane. It is unstable under light and high temperatures but remains stable in the dark and under heat. However, increased temperature and extended heating time decrease its retention rate and accelerate degradation. Lutein esters are more stable than lutein under the same light and heat conditions. Lutein exists in combination with fatty acids, enhancing stability. Both lutein and lutein esters are destroyed under strong acidic conditions but remain stable under neutral and alkaline conditions. The microspheres were obtained by coating lutein with polyethylene glycol (PEG) of varying molecular weights, specifically PEG 2000 and PEG 4000. This treatment enhanced water solubility and improved stability against light and heat. The maximum absorption peak occurs at a wavelength of 446nm±1nm.
