China's current "National Food Safety Standard for the  Food Additives Use" (GB 2760) stipulates that natural carotene, sorghum red, and beet red can be employed in the majority of food categories, and their application scope is relatively broad. Beet red has been approved for use as a food colorant by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other relevant agencies worldwide. It is labeled E162 in the European Union and can also be listed on the ingredient label under the general name "Beet red".

Beet red, also known as beetroot red, is a food additive derived from the extract of red beet (Laver head ) using water, and produced through spraying and drying. Red beet, also known as flame vegetable or laver head, belongs to the Familia Chenopodiaceae, Genus Beta, originally from Europe and widely cultivated in fields of China's Yangtze River basin. Modern scientific research has verified that red beets are highly nutritious, containing crude protein, soluble sugar, crude fat, dietary fiber, vitamin C, niacin, etc., as well as potassium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, ferrum, calcium, zinc, manganese, copper, and other minerals, which can nourish the body by supplementing the necessary nutrients. Beet red (beet root red/beet red), also known as beetroot red, food additive CNS number: 08.101, INS international code system: 162, is a food additive obtained from red beet (laver head) extracted with water and produced through spraying and drying. It is readily soluble in water and has excellent dyeing property, featuring a natural source and good stability. The product quality standard " National Food Safety Standard for Food Additives Beet red" (GB 1886.111-2015) provides sensory, physical and chemical indicators.
